Leila Armstrong is a Lethbridge-based artist who recently completed her PhD in Evolution and Behaviour at the University of Lethbridge. Leila has a BA in Fine and Performing Arts from Simon Fraser University and a MA in Media Studies from Concordia University in Montréal. Armstrong has worked both independently and in collaboration with other artists, such as in 12 Point Buck (2009-2011) and M.E.D.I.U.M. (2011-2016). As part of her PhD project she produced a body of work collectively titled Backyard Wilderness, which explores our relationship with urban wildlife and argues for coexistence. This project involved two solo exhibitions, a small project-space exhibition, six billboards, three vinyl wrapped electrical boxes, three residencies, and a booklet of cartoons. Exhibitions were mounted at the Helen Schuler Nature Centre (2019), Okotoks Art Gallery (2021), Casa Arts Centre (2022 & 2023), Crowsnest Pass Public Art Gallery (2022), Red Deer Museum and Art Gallery (2024), and the Leighton Art Centre (2025). Curatorial projects include Cabinet of Queeriosities I-V, celebrating LGBTQ+ culture, history, and identity.
